Overview

Data mining is the crucial process of extracting implicit and possibly useful information from data. It uses analytical and visualization techniques to explore and present information in a format which is easily understandable by humans.

GScholarXScraper: Hacking the GScholarScraper function with XPath

Kay Cichini recently wrote a word-cloud R function called GScholarScraper on his blog which when given a search string will scrape the associated search results returned by Google Scholar, across pages, and then produce a word-cloud visualisation.

This was of interest to me because around the same time I posted an independent Google Scholar scraper function  get_google_scholar_df() which does a similar job of the scraping part of Kay’s function using XPath (whereas he had used Regular Expressions). My function worked as follows: when given a Google Scholar URL it will extract as much information as it can from each search result on the URL webpage  into different columns of a dataframe structure.

In the comments of his blog post I figured it’d be fun to hack his function to provide an XPath alternative, GScholarXScraper. Essensially it’s still the same function he wrote and therefore full credit should go to Kay on this one as he fully deserves it – I certainly had no previous idea how to make a word cloud, plus I hadn’t used the tm package in ages (to the point where I’d forgotten most of it!). The main changes I made were as follows:

    Restructure internal code of GScholarScraper into a series of local functions which each do a seperate job (this made it easier for me to hack because I understood what was doing what and why).

    As far as possible, strip out Regular Expressions and replace with XPath alternatives (made possible via the XML package). Hence the change of name to GScholarXScraper. Basically, apart from a little messing about with the generation of the URLs I just copied over my get_google_scholar_df() function and removed the Regular Expression alternatives. I’m not saying one is better than the other but f0r me personally, I find XPath shorter and quicker to code but either is a good approach for web scraping like this (note to self: I really need to lean more about regular expressions!) :)

•    Vectorise a few of the loops I saw (it surprises me how second nature this has become to me – I used to find the *apply family of functions rather confusing but thankfully not so much any more!).
•    Make use of getURL from the RCurl package (I was getting some mutibyte string problems originally when using readLines but this approach automatically fixed it for me).
•    Add option to make a word-cloud from either the “title” or the “description” fields of the Google Scholar search results
•    Added steaming via the Rstem package because I couldn’t get the Snowball package to install with my version of java. This was important to me because I was getting word clouds with variations of the same word on it e.g. “game”, “games”, “gaming”.
•    Forced use of URLencode() on generation of URLs to automatically avoid problems with search terms like “Baldur’s Gate” which would otherwise fail.

I think that’s pretty much everything I added. Anyway, here’s how it works (link to full code at end of post):

Not bad. I could see myself using the text mining and word cloud functionality with other projects I’ve been playing with such as Facebook, Google+, Yahoo search pages, Google search pages, Bing search pages… could be fun!

Do blog scraping sites violate the blog owner's copyright?

I noticed that my blog has been posted on one of these website scraping sites. This is the kind of site that has no original content, but just repeats or scrapes content others have written and does it to get some small amount of ad income from ads on the scraping site. In essence the scraping site is taking advantage of the content of the originating site in order to make a few dollars from people who go to the site looking for something else. Some of these websites prey on misspelling. If you accidentally misspell the name of an original site, you just may end up with one of these patently commercial scraping sites.

Google defines scraping as follows:

•    Sites that copy and republish content from other sites without adding any original content or value
•    Sites that copy content from other sites, modify it slightly (for example, by substituting synonyms or using automated techniques), and republish it
•    Sites that reproduce content feeds from other sites without providing some type of unique organization or benefit to the user

My question, as set out in the title to this post, is whether or not scraping is a violation of copyright. It turns out that the answer is likely very complicated.  You have to look at the definition of a scraping site very carefully. Let me give you some hypotheticals to show what I mean.

Let's suppose that I write a blog and put a link in my blog post to your blog. Does that link violate your copyright? I can't imagine that anyone would think that there was problem with linking to another website on the Web. In this case, there is no content from the originating site, just a link.

But let's carry the hypothetical a little further. What if I put a link to your site and quote some of your content? Does this violate copyright law? If you are acquainted with any of the terminology of copyright law; think fair use. The issue here is whether or not the "quoted" material is a substantial reproduction of the entire original content? I would have the opinion that duplicating an entire blog post either with or without attribution would be a violation of the originator's copyright.

So is the scraping website protected by the "fair use" doctrine? Does the fact that the motivation for listing the original websites is to make money have anything to do with how you would decide if there was or was not a violation of the originator's copyright? By the way, the copyright does not make a distinction between a commercial and non-commercial use of the original constituting or not constituting a violation of copyright. The fact that the reproducing (scraping) party does not make money from the reproduction is not a factor in the issue of violation, although it may ultimately be an issue as to the amount of damages assessed.

Does the fact that the actions of the scraper annoy me, make any difference? I would answer, not in the least. Whether or not you are annoyed by the violation of the copyright makes no difference as to whether or not there is a violation. Likewise, you have no independent claims for your wounded feelings because of the copied content. Copyright is a statutory action (i.e. based on statutory law) and unless the cause of action is recognized by the law, there is no cause of action. Now, in an outrageous case, you may have  some kind of tort (personal injury) claim, but that is way outside of my hypothetical situation.

So what is the answer? Does scraping violate the originator's copyright? If only a small portion of the blog is copied (scraped) then I would have to have the opinion that it is not. Essentially, no matter what the motivation of the scrapper, there is not enough content copied to violate the fair use doctrine. Now, that is my opinion. Your's might differ. That is what makes lawsuits.

Do I think there are other reasons why scraping websites are objectionable? Certainly, but those reasons have nothing to do with copyright and they are probably the subject of another different blog post. So, if you are reading this from scraping website, bear in mind that there may be a serious problem with that type of website.

Microfinance Data Scraping

I went to the Datakind‘s New York Datadive last November and met the Microfinance Information Exchange (MIX), a group that ‘delivers data services, analysis, research and business information on the institutions that provide financial services to the world’s poor’. They wanted to see whether web-scraping could save them from manually gathering data. So fellow divers and I showed MIX the utility of web-scraping. Over the course of a day, about six people scraped data about microfinance institutions from a bunch of websites, saving MIX an estimated year of manual data entry.

Finding & Removing Spam Blogs Who Scrape Content Onto Free Hosted Blogs

The more popular you become in the blogging world, the more crap you have to deal with!
Content scraping is one chore that can be dealt with swiftly once you understand what to do.
This post contains links which you can use to quickly and easily report content scrapers and spam blogs.

First step is to find your url’s which have been scraped of content and then get the scrapers spam blog removed.

Login to your Google Webmaster Tools account and go to traffic > links to your site.

A common method scrapers use is to post the scraped content from your rss feed on to a free hosted blog like WordPress.com or blogger.com.

Once you click the WordPress.com link in webmaster tools, you’ll find all the url’s which have been scraped.

There’s 32 url’s which have been linked to so its simply a matter of clicking each of your links and finding the culprits.

The first link is my homepage which has been linked to by legit domains like WordPress developers.
The others are mainly linked to by spam blogs who have scraped the content and used a free hosted service which in this case is WordPress.com.

Its very easy to setup a Google alert to find your post titles when they get scraped.
If you’ve setup the WordPress SEO plugin correctly, you should have included your site title at the end of all your post titles.
Then all you need to do is setup a Google alert for your site title and you’ll be notified every time a scraper links to your content.

Web Scraping’s 2013 Review – part 1

Here we are, almost having ended another year and having the chance to analyze the aspects of the Web scraping market over the last twelve months. First of all i want to underline all the buzzwords on the tech field as published in the Yahoo’s year in review article . According to Yahoo, the most searched items wore

  •     iPhone (including 4, 5, 5s, 5c, and 6)
  •     Samsung (including Galaxy, S4, S3, Note)
  •     Siri
  •     iPad Cases
  •     Snapchat
  •     Google Glass
  •     Apple iPad

It’s easy to see that none of this terms regards in any way with the field of data mining, and they rather focus on the gadgets and apps industry, which is just one of the ways technology can evolve to. Regarding actual data mining industry there were a lot of talks about it in this year’s MIT’s Engaging Data 2013 Conference. One of the speakers Noam Chomsky gave an acid speech relating data extraction and its connection to the Big Data phenomena that is also on everyone’s lips this year. He defined a good way to see if Big Data works by following a series of few simple factors: 1. It’s the analysis, not the raw data, that counts. 2. A picture is worth a thousand words 3. Make a big data portal (Not sure if Facebook is planning on dominating in cloud services some day) 4. Use a hybrid organizational model (We’re asleep already, soon)  let’s move 5. Train employees Other interesting declaration  was given by EETimes saying, “Data science will do more for medicine in the next 10 years than biological science.” which says a lot about the volume of required extracted data.

Scraping XML Tables with R

A couple of my good friends also recently started a sports analytics blog. We’ve decided to collaborate on a couple of studies revolving around NBA data found at www.basketball-reference.com. This will be the first part of that project!

Data scientists need data. The internet has lots of data. How can I get that data into R? Scrape it!

People have been scraping websites for as long as there have been websites. It’s gotten pretty easy using R/Python/whatever other tool you want to use. This post shows how to use R to scrape the demographic information for all NBA and ABA players listed at www.basketball-reference.com.

Web Scraping Tools for Non-developers

I recently spoke with a resource-limited organization that is investigating government corruption and wants to access various public datasets to monitor politicians and law firms. They don’t have developers in-house, but feel pretty comfortable analyzing datasets in CSV form. While many public datasources are available in structured form, some sources are hidden in what us data folks call the deep web. Amazon is a nice example of a deep website, where you have to enter text into a search box, click on a few buttons to narrow down your results, and finally access relatively structured data (prices, model numbers, etc.) embedded in HTML. Amazon has a structured database of their products somewhere, but all you get to see is a bunch of webpages trapped behind some forms.

A developer usually isn’t hindered by the deep web. If we want the data on a webpage, we can automate form submissions and key presses, and we can parse some ugly HTML before emitting reasonably structured CSVs or JSON. But what can one accomplish without writing code?

This turns out to be a hard problem. Lots of companies have tried, to varying degrees of success, to build a programmer-free interface for structured web data extraction. I had the pleasure of working on one such project, called Needlebase at ITA before Google acquired it and closed things down. David Huynh, my wonderful colleague from grad school, prototyped a tool called Sifter that did most of what one would need, but like all good research from 2006, the lasting impact is his paper rather than his software artifact.

Below, I’ve compiled a list of some available tools. The list comes from memory, the advice of some friends that have done this before, and, most productively, a question on Twitter that Hilary Mason was nice enough to retweet.

The bad news is that none of the tools I tested would work out of the box for the specific use case I was testing. To understand why, I’ll break down the steps required for a working web scraper, and then use those steps to explain where various solutions broke down.

The anatomy of a web scraper

There are three steps to a structured extraction pipeline:

    Authenticate yourself. This might require logging in to a website or filling out a CAPTCHA to prove you’re not…a web scraper. Because the source I wanted to scrape required filling out a CAPTCHA, all of the automated tools I’ll review below failed step 1. It suggests that as a low bar, good scrapers should facilitate a human in the loop: automate the things machines are good at automating, and fall back to a human to perform authentication tasks the machines can’t do on their own.

    Navigate to the pages with the data. This might require entering some text into a search box (e.g., searching for a product on Amazon), or it might require clicking “next” through all of the pages that results are split over (often called pagination). Some of the tools I looked at allowed entering text into search boxes, but none of them correctly handled pagination across multiple pages of results.

    Extract the data. On any page you’d like to extract content from, the scraper has to help you identify the data you’d like to extract. The cleanest example of this that I’ve seen is captured in a video for one of the tools below: the interface lets you click on some text you want to pluck out of a website, asks you to label it, and then allows you to correct mistakes it learns how to extract the other examples on the page.

As you’ll see in a moment, the steps at the top of this list are hardest to automate.

What are the tools?

Here are some of the tools that came highly recommended, and my experience with them. None of those passed the CAPTCHA test, so I’ll focus on their handling of navigation and extraction.

    Web Scraper is a Chrome plugin that allows you to build navigable site maps and extract elements from those site maps. It would have done everything necessary in this scenario, except the source I was trying to scrape captured click events on links (I KNOW!), which tripped things up. You should give it a shot if you’d like to scrape a simpler site, and the youtube video that comes with it helps get around the slightly confusing user interface.

    import.io looks like a clean webpage-to-api story. The service views any webpage as a potential data source to generate an API from. If the page you’re looking at has been scraped before, you can access an API or download some of its data. If the page hasn’t been processed before, import.io walks you through the process of building connectors (for navigation) or extractors (to pull out the data) for the site. Once at the page with the data you want, you can annotate a screenshot of the page with the fields you’d like to extract. After you submit your request, it appears to get queued for extraction. I’m still waiting for the data 24 hours after submitting a request, so I can’t vouch for the quality, but the delay suggests that import.io uses crowd workers to turn your instructions into some sort of semi-automated extraction process, which likely helps improve extraction quality. The site I tried to scrape requires an arcane combination of javascript/POST requests that threw import.io’s connectors for a lo
op, and ultimately made it impossible to tell import.io how to navigate the site. Despite the complications, import.io seems like one of the more polished website-to-data efforts on this list.

    Kimono was one of the most popular suggestions I got, and is quite polished. After installing the Kimono bookmarklet in your browser, you can select elements of the page you wish to extract, and provide some positive/negative examples to train the extractor. This means that unlike import.io, you don’t have to wait to get access to the extracted data. After labeling the data, you can quickly export it as CSV/JSON/a web endpoint. The tool worked seamlessly to extract a feed from the Hackernews front page, but I’d imagine that failures in the automated approach would make me wish I had access to import.io’s crowd workers. The tool would be high on my list except that navigation/pagination is coming soon, and will ultimately cost money.

    Dapper, which is now owned by Yahoo!, provides about the same level of scraping capabilities as Kimono. You can extract content, but like Kimono it’s unclear how to navigate/paginate.

    Google Docs was an unexpected contender. If the data you’re extracting is in an HTML table/RSS Feed/CSV file/XML document on a single webpage with no navigation/authentication, you can use one of the Import* functions in Google Docs. The IMPORTHTML macro worked as advertised in a quick test.

    iMacros is a tool that I could imagine solves all of the tasks I wanted, but costs more than I was willing to pay to write this blog post. Interestingly, the free version handles the steps that the other tools on this list don’t do as well: navigation. Through your browser, iMacros lets you automate filling out forms, clicking on “next” links, etc. To perform extraction, you have to pay at least $495.

    A friend has used Screen-scraper in the past with good outcomes. It handles navigation as well as extraction, but costs money and requires a small amount of programming/tokenization skills.

    Winautomation seems cool, but it’s only available for Windows, which was a dead end for me.

So that’s it? Nothing works?

Not quite. None of these tools solved the problem I had on a very challenging website: the site clearly didn’t want to be crawled given the CAPTCHA, and the javascript-submitted POST requests threw most of the tools that expected navigation through links for a loop. Still, most of the tools I reviewed have snazzy demos, and I was able to use some of them for extracting content from sites that were less challenging than the one I initially intended to scrape.

All hope is not lost, however. Where pure automation fails, a human can step in. Several proposals suggested paying people on oDesk, Mechanical Turk, or CrowdFlower to extract the content with a human touch. This would certainly get us past the CAPTCHA and hard-to-automate navigation. It might get pretty expensive to have humans copy/paste the data for extraction, however. Given that the tools above are good at extracting content from any single page, I suspect there’s room for a human-in-the-loop scraping tool to steal the show: humans can navigate and train the extraction step, and the machine can perform the extraction. I suspect that’s what import.io is up to, and I’m hopeful they keep the tool available to folks like the ones I initially tried to help.

While we’re on the topic of human-powered solutions, it might make sense to hire a developer on oDesk to just implement the scraper for the site this organization was looking at. While a lot of the developer-free tools I mentioned above look promising, there are clearly cases where paying someone for a few hours of script-building just makes sense.

A Content Marketer's Guide to Data Scraping

As digital marketers, big data should be what we use to inform a lot of the decisions we make. Using intelligence to understand what works within your industry is absolutely crucial within content campaigns, but it blows my mind to know that so many businesses aren't focusing on it.

One reason I often hear from businesses is that they don't have the budget to invest in complex and expensive tools that can feed in reams of data to them. That said, you don't always need to invest in expensive tools to gather valuable intelligence — this is where data scraping comes in.

Just so you understand, here's a very brief overview of what data scraping is from Wikipedia:

    "Data scraping is a technique in which a computer program extracts data from human-readable output coming from another program."

Essentially, it involves crawling through a web page and gathering nuggets of information that you can use for your analysis. For example, you could search through a site like Search Engine Land and scrape the author names of each of the posts that have been published, and then you could correlate this to social share data to find who the top performing authors are on that website.

Hopefully, you can start to see how this data can be valuable. What's more, it doesn't require any coding knowledge — if you're able to follow my simple instructions, you can start gathering information that will inform your content campaigns. I've recently used this research to help me get a post published on the front page of BuzzFeed, getting viewed over 100,000 times and channeling a huge amount of traffic through to my blog.

Disclaimer: One thing that I really need to stress before you read on is the fact that scraping a website may breach its terms of service. You should ensure that this isn't the case before carrying out any scraping activities. For example, Twitter completely prohibits the scraping of information on their site. This is from their Terms of Service:

    "crawling the Services is permissible if done in accordance with the provisions of the robots.txt file, however, scraping the Services without the prior consent of Twitter is expressly prohibited"

Google similarly forbids the scraping of content from their web properties:

    Google's Terms of Service do not allow the sending of automated queries of any sort to our system without express permission in advance from Google.

So be careful, kids.
Content analysis

Mastering the basics of data scraping will open up a whole new world of possibilities for content analysis. I'd advise any content marketer (or at least a member of their team) to get clued up on this.

Before I get started on the specific examples, you'll need to ensure that you have Microsoft Excel on your computer (everyone should have Excel!) and also the SEO Tools plugin for Excel (free download here). I put together a full tutorial on using the SEO tools plugin that you may also be interested in.

Alongside this, you'll want a web crawling tool like Screaming Frog's SEO Spider or Xenu Link Sleuth (both have free options). Once you've got these set up, you'll be able to do everything that I outline below.

So here are some ways in which you can use scraping to analyse content and how this can be applied into your content marketing campaigns:

1. Finding the different authors of a blog

Analysing big publications and blogs to find who the influential authors are can give you some really valuable data. Once you have a list of all the authors on a blog, you can find out which of those have created content that has performed well on social media, had a lot of engagement within the comments and also gather extra stats around their social following, etc.

I use this information on a daily basis to build relationships with influential writers and get my content placed on top tier websites. Here's how you can do it:

Step 1: Gather a list of the URLs from the domain you're analysing using Screaming Frog's SEO Spider. Simply add the root domain into Screaming Frog's interface and hit start (if you haven't used this tool before, you can check out my tutorial here).

Once the tool has finished gathering all the URLs (this can take a little while for big websites), simply export them all to an Excel spreadsheet.

Step 2: Open up Google Chrome and navigate to one of the article pages of the domain you're analysing and find where they mention the author's name (this is usually within an author bio section or underneath the post title). Once you've found this, right-click their name and select inspect element (this will bring up the Chrome developer console).

Within the developer console, the line of code associated to the author's name that you selected will be highlighted (see the below image). All you need to do now is right-click on the highlighted line of code and press Copy XPath.

For the Search Engine Land website, the following code would be copied:

//*[@id="leftCol"]/div[2]/p/span/a

This may not make any sense to you at this stage, but bear with me and you'll see how it works.

Step 3: Go back to your spreadsheet of URLs and get rid of all the extra information that Screaming Frog gives you, leaving just the list of raw URLs – add these to the first column (column A) of your worksheet.

Step 4: In cell B2, add the following formula:

=XPathOnUrl(A2,"//*[@id='leftCol']/div[2]/p/span/a")

Just to break this formula down for you, the function XPathOnUrl allows you to use the XPath code directly within (this is with the SEO Tools plugin installed; it won't work without this). The first element of the function specifies which URL we are going to scrape. In this instance I've selected cell A2, which contains a URL from the crawl I did within Screaming Frog (alternatively, you could just type the URL, making sure that you wrap it within quotation marks).

Finally, the last part of the function is our XPath code that we gathered. One thing to note is that you have to remove the quotation marks from the code and replace them with apostrophes. In this example, I'm referring to the "leftCol" section, which I've changed to ‘leftCol' — if you don't do this, Excel won't read the formula correctly.

Once you press enter, there may be a couple of seconds delay whilst the SEO Tools plugin crawls the page, then it will return a result. It's worth mentioning that within the example I've given above, we're looking for author names on article pages, so if I try to run this on a URL that isn't an article (e.g. the homepage) I will get an error.

For those interested, the XPath code itself works by starting at the top of the code of the URL specified and following the instructions outlined to find on-page elements and return results. So, for the following code:

//*[@id='leftCol']/div[2]/p/span/a

We're telling it to look for any element (//*) that has an id of leftCol (@id='leftCol') and then go down to the second div tag after this (div[2]), followed by a p tag, a span tag and finally, an a tag (/p/span/a). The result returned should be the text within this a tag.

Don't worry if you don't understand this, but if you do, it will help you to create your own XPath. For example, if you wanted to grab the output of an a tag that has rel=author attached to it (another great way of finding page authors), then you could use some XPath that looked a little something like this:

//a[@rel='author']

As a full formula within Excel it would look something like this:

=XPathOnUrl(A2,"//a[@rel='author']")

Once you've created the formula, you can drag it down and apply it to a large number of URLs all at once. This is a huge time-saver as you'd have to manually go through each website and copy/paste each author to get the same results without scraping – I don't need to explain how long this would take.

Now that I've explained the basics, I'll show you some other ways in which scraping can be used…

2. Finding extra details around page authors

So, we've found a list of author names, which is great, but to really get some more insight into the authors we will need more data. Again, this can often be scraped from the website you're analysing.

Most blogs/publications that list the names of the article author will actually have individual author pages. Again, using Search Engine Land as an example, if you click my name at the top of this post you will be taken to a page that has more details on me, including my Twitter profile, Google+ profile and LinkedIn profile. This is the kind of data that I'd want to gather because it gives me a point of contact for the author I'm looking to get in touch with.

Here's how you can do it.

Step 1: First we need to get the author profile URLs so that we can scrape the extra details off of them. To do this, you can use the same approach to find the author's name, with just a little addition to the formula:

=XPathOnUrl(A2,"//a[@rel='author']", <strong>"href"</strong>)

The addition of the "href" part of the formula will extract the output of the href attribute of the atag. In Lehman terms, it will find the hyperlink attached to the author name and return that URL as a result.

Step 2: Now that we have the author profile page URLs, you can go on and gather the social media profiles. Instead of scraping the article URLs, we'll be using the profile URLs.

So, like last time, we need to find the XPath code to gather the Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn links. To do this, open up Google Chrome and navigate to one of the author profile pages, right-click on the Twitter link and select Inspect Element.

Once you've done this, hover over the highlighted line of code within Chrome's developer tools, right-click and select Copy XPath.

Step 3: Finally, open up your Excel spreadsheet and add in the following formula (using the XPath that you've copied over):

=XPathOnUrl(C2,"//*[@id='leftCol']/div[2]/p/a[2]", "href")

Remember that this is the code for scraping Search Engine Land, so if you're doing this on a different website, it will almost certainly be different. One important thing to highlight here is that I've selected cell C2 here, which contains the URL of the author profile page and not just the article page. As well as this, you'll notice that I've included "href" at the end because we want the actual Twitter profile URL and not just the words ‘Twitter'.

You can now repeat this same process to get the Google+ and LinkedIn profile URLs and add it to your spreadsheet. Hopefully you're starting to see the value in this, and how it can be used to gather a lot of intelligence that can be used for all kinds of online activity, not least your SEO and social media campaigns.

3. Gathering the follower counts across social networks

Now that we have the author's social media accounts, it makes sense to get their follower counts so that they can be ranked based on influence within the spreadsheet.

Here are the final XPath formulae that you can plug straight into Excel for each network to get their follower counts. All you'll need to do is replace the text INSERT SOCIAL PROFILE URL with the cell reference to the Google+/LinkedIn URL:

Google+:

=XPathOnUrl(<strong>INSERTGOOGLEPROFILEURL</strong>,"//span[@class='BOfSxb']")

LinkedIn:

=XPathOnUrl(<strong>INSERTLINKEDINURL</strong>,"//dd[@class='overview-connections']/p/strong")

4. Scraping page titles

Once you've got a list of URLs, you're going to want to get an idea of what the content is actually about. Using this quick bit of XPath against any URL will display the title of the page:

=XPathOnUrl(A2,"//title")

To be fair, if you're using the SEO Tools plugin for Excel then you can just use the built-in feature to scrape page titles, but it's always handy to know how to do it manually!

A nice extra touch for analysis is to look at the number of words used within the page titles. To do this, use the following formula:

=CountWords(A2)

From this you can get an understanding of what the optimum title length of a post within a website is. This is really handy if you're pitching an article to a specific publication. If you make the post the best possible fit for the site and back up your decisions with historical data, you stand a much better chance of success.

Taking this a step further, you can gather the social shares for each URL using the following functions:

Twitter:

=TwitterCount(<strong>INSERTURLHERE</strong>)

Facebook:

=FacebookLikes(<strong>INSERTURLHERE</strong>)

Google+:

=GooglePlusCount(<strong>INSERTURLHERE</strong>)

Note: You can also use a tool like URL Profiler to pull in this data, which is much better for large data sets. The tool also helps you to gather large chunks of data from other social networks, link data sources like Ahrefs, Majestic SEO and Moz, which is awesome.

If you want to get even more social stats then you can use the SharedCount API, and this is how you go about doing it…

Firstly, create a new column in your Excel spreadsheet and add the following formula (where A2 is the URL of the webpage you want to gather social stats for):

=CONCATENATE("http://api.sharedcount.com/?url=",A2)

You should now have a cell that contains your webpage URL prefixed with the SharedCount API URL. This is what we will use to gather social stats. Now here's the Excel formula to use for each network (where B2 is the cell that contaiins the formula above):

StumbleUpon:

=JsonPathOnUrl(B2,"StumbleUpon")

Reddit:

=JsonPathOnUrl(B2,"Reddit")

Delicious:

=JsonPathOnUrl(B2,"Delicious")

Digg:

=JsonPathOnUrl(B2,"Diggs")

=JsonPathOnUrl(B2,"Pinterest")

LinkedIn:

=JsonPathOnUrl(B2,"Linkedin")

Facebook Shares:

=JsonPathOnUrl(B2,"Facebook.share_count")

Facebook Comments:

=JsonPathOnUrl(B2,"Facebook.comment_count")

Once you have this data, you can start looking much deeper into the elements of a successful post. Here's an example of a chart that I created around a large sample of articles that I analysed within Upworthy.com.

The chart looks at the average number of social shares that an article on Upworthy receives vs the number of words within its title. This is invaluable data that can be used across a whole host of different on-page elements to get the perfect article template for the site you're pitching to.

See, big data is useful!

5. Date/time the post was published

Along with analysing the details of headlines that are working within a site, you may want to look at the optimal posting times for best results. This is something that I regularly do within my blogs to ensure that I'm getting the best possible return from the time I spend writing.

Every site is different, which makes it very difficult for an automated, one-size-fits-all tool to gather this information. Some sites will have this data within the <head> section of their webpages, but others will display it directly under the article headline. Again, Search Engine Land is a perfect example of a website doing this…

So here's how you can scrape this information from the articles on Search Engine Land:

=XPathOnUrl(<strong>INSERTARTICLEURL</strong>,"//*[@class='dateline']/text()")

Now you've got the date and time of the post. You may want to trim this down and reformat it for your data analysis, but you've got it all in Excel so that should be pretty easy.

Extra reading

Data scraping is seriously powerful, and once you've had a bit of a play around with it you'll also realise that it's not that complicated. The examples that I've given are just a starting point but once you get your creative head on, you'll soon start to see the opportunities that arise from this intelligence.

    Spend more time analysing what content will get you results as opposed to what sites will give you links!

Web Scraping for SEO with these Open-Source Scrapers

When conducting Search Engine Optimization (SEO), we’re required to scrape websites for data, our campaigns, and reports for our clients. At the lowest level we utilize scraping to keep track of rankings on search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo, even keep a track of links on websites to know when it’s completed its lifespan. Then we’ve used them to help us aggregate data from APIs, RSS feeds, and websites to conduct some of our data mining to find patterns to help us become more competitive. 

So scraping is a function majority of companies (SEOmoz, Raventools, and Google) have to do to either save money, protect intellectual property, track trends, etc… Businesses can find infinite uses with scraping tools, it just depends if you’re an printed circuit board manufacturer looking for ideas on your e-mail marketing campaign or a Orange County based business trying to keep an eye out on the competition. which is why we’ve created a comprehensive list of open source scrapers out there to help all the businesses out there. Just keep in mind we haven’t used all of them!

Words of caution, web scrapers require knowledge specific to the language such as PHP & cURL. Take into considerations issues like cookie management, fault tolerance, organizing the data properly, not crashing the website being scraped, and making sure the website doesn’t prohibit scraping.

Get started with screenscraping using Google Chrome’s Scraper extension

How do you get information from a website to a Excel spreadsheet? The answer is screenscraping. There are a number of softwares and plattforms (such as OutWit Hub, Google Docs and Scraper Wiki) that helps you do this, but none of them are – in my opinion – as easy to use as the Google Chrome extension Scraper, which has become one of my absolutely favourite data tools.

What is a screenscraper?

I like to think of a screenscraper as a small robot that reads websites and extracts pieces of information. When you are able to unleash a scraper on hundreads, thousands or even more pages it can be an incredibly powerful tool.

In its most simple form, the one that we will look at in this blog post, it gathers information from one webpage only.

Google Chrome’s Scraper

Scraper is an Google Chrome extension that can be installed for free at Chrome Web Store.

Now if you installed the extension correctly you should be able to see the option “Scrape similar” if you right-click any element on a webpage.

The Task: Scraping the contact details of all Swedish MPs

This is the site we’ll be working with, a list of all Swedish MPs, including their contact details. Start by right-clicking the name of any person and chose Scrape similar. This should open the following window.

Understanding XPaths

At w3schools you’ll find a broader introduction to XPaths.

Before we move on to the actual scrape, let me briefly introduce XPaths. XPath is a language for finding information in an XML structure, for example an HTML file. It is a way to select tags (or rather “nodes”) of interest. In this case we use XPaths to define what parts of the webpage that we want to collect.

A typical XPath might look something like this:

    //div[@id="content"]/table[1]/tr

Which in plain English translates to:

    // - Search the whole document...

    div[@id="content"] - ...for the div tag with the id "content".

    table[1] -  Select the first table.

    tr - And in that table, grab all rows.

Over to Scraper then. I’m given the following suggested XPath:

    //section[1]/div/div/div/dl/dt/a

The results look pretty good, but it seems we only get names starting with an A. And we would also like to collect to phone numbers and party names. So let’s go back to the webpage and look at the HTML structure.

Right-click one of the MPs and chose Inspect element. We can see that each alphabetical list is contained in a section tag with the class “grid_6 alpha omega searchresult container clist”.

 And if we open the section tag we find the list of MPs in div tags.

We will do this scrape in two steps. Step one is to select the tags containing all information about the MPs with one XPath. Step two is to pick the specific pieces of data that we are interested in (name, e-mail, phone number, party) and place them in columns.

Writing our XPaths

In step one we want to try to get as deep into the HTML structure as possible without losing any of the elements we are interested in. Hover the tags in the Elements window to see what tags correspond to what elements on the page.

In our case this is the last tag that contains all the data we are looking for:

Click Scrape to test run the XPath. It should give you a list that looks something like this.

Scroll down the list to make sure it has 349 rows. That is the number of MPs in the Swedish parliament. The second step is to split this data into columns. Go back to the webpage and inspect the HTML code.

I have highlighted the parts that we want to extract. Grab them with the following XPaths:

    name: dt/a
    party: dd[1]
    region: dd[2]/span[1]
    seat: dd[2]/span[2]
    phone: dd[3]
    e-mail: dd[4]/span/a

Insert these paths in the Columns field and click Scrape to run the scraper.

Click Export to Google Docs to get the data into a spreadsheet.

Screen-scraping with WWW::Mechanize

Screen-scraping is the process of emulating an interaction with a Web site - not just downloading pages, but filling out forms, navigating around the site, and dealing with the HTML received as a result. As well as for traditional lookups of information - like the example we'll be exploring in this article - we can use screen-scraping to enhance a Web service into doing something the designers hadn't given us the power to do in the first place. Here's an example:

I do my banking online, but get quickly bored with having to go to my bank's site, log in, navigate around to my accounts and check the balance on each of them. One quick Perl module (Finance::Bank::HSBC) later, and now I can loop through each of my accounts and print their balances, all from a shell prompt. Some more code, and I can do something the bank's site doesn't ordinarily let me - I can treat my accounts as a whole instead of individual accounts, and find out how much money I have, could possibly spend, and owe, all in total.

Another step forward would be to schedule a crontab every day to use the HSBC option to download a copy of my transactions in Quicken's QIF format, and use Simon Cozens' Finance::QIF module to interpret the file and run those transactions against a budget, letting me know whether I'm spending too much lately. This takes a simple Web-based system from being merely useful to being automated and bespoke; if you can think of how to write the code, then you can do it. (It's probably wise for me to add the caveat, though, that you should be extremely careful working with banking information programatically, and even more careful if you're storing your login details in a Perl script somewhere.)

Back to screen-scrapers, and introducing WWW::Mechanize, written by Andy Lester and based on Skud's WWW::Automate. Mechanize allows you to go to a URL and explore the site, following links by name, taking cookies, filling in forms and clicking "submit" buttons. We're also going to use HTML::TokeParser to process the HTML we're given back, which is a process I've written about previously.

The site I've chosen to demonstrate on is the BBC's Radio Times site, which allows users to create a "Diary" for their favorite TV programs, and will tell you whenever any of the programs is showing on any channel. Being a London Perl M[ou]nger, I have an obsession with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. If I tell this to the BBC's site, then it'll tell me when the next episode is, and what the episode name is - so I can check whether it's one I've seen before. I'd have to remember to log into their site every few days to check whether there was a new episode coming along, though. Perl to the rescue! Our script will check to see when the next episode is and let us know, along with the name of the episode being shown.

If you're going to run the script yourself, then you should register with the Radio Times site and create a diary, before giving the e-mail address you used to do so below.

We create a WWW::Mechanize object, and tell it the address of the site we'll be working from. The Radio Times' front page has an image link with an ALT text of "My Diary", so we can use that to get to the right section of the site:

The returned page contains two forms - one to allow you to choose from a list box of program types, and then a login form for the diary function. We tell WWW::Mechanize to use the second form for input. (Something to remember here is that WWW::Mechanize's list of forms, unlike an array in Perl, is indexed starting at 1 rather than 0. Our index is, therefore,'2.')

Now we can fill in our e-mail address for the '<INPUT name="email" type="text">' field, and click the submit button. Nothing too complicated.

WWW::Mechanize moves us to our diary page. This is the page we need to process to find the date details from. Upon looking at the HTML source for this page, we can see that the HTML we need to work through is something like:

The important methods to note are get_tag - which will move the stream on to the next opening for the tag given - and get_trimmed_text, which returns the text between the current and given tags. For example, for the HTML code "<b>Bold text here</b>", my $tag = get_trimmed_text("/b") would return "Bold text here" to $tag.

Also note that we're initializing HTML::TokeParser on '\$agent->{content}' - this is an internal variable for WWW::Mechanize, exposing the HTML content of the current page.

We have a scalar, $date, containing a string that looks something like "Thursday 23 January, from 6:45pm to 7:30pm.", and we have an URL, in $1, that will tell us more about that episode. We tell WWW::Mechanize to go to the URL:

The navigation we want to perform on this page is far less complex than on the last page, so we can avoid using a TokeParser for it - a regular expression should suffice. The HTML we want to parse looks something like this:

We use a regex delimited with '!' in order to avoid having to escape the slashes present in the HTML, and store any number of alphanumeric characters after some whitespace, all between <br> tags after the Episode header:

I hope this gives a light-hearted introduction to the usefulness of the modules involved. As a note for your own experiments, WWW::Mechanize supports cookies - in that the requestor is a normal LWP::UserAgent object - but they aren't enabled by default. If you need to support cookies, then your script should call "use HTTP::Cookies; $agent->cookie_jar(HTTP::Cookies->new);" on your agent object in order to enable session-volatile cookies for your own code.

How to scrape Amazon with WebDriver in Java

Here is a real-world example of using Selenium WebDriver for scraping.
This short program is written in Java and scrapes book title and author from the Amazon webstore.
This code scrapes only one page, but you can easily make it scraping all the pages by adding a couple of lines.

Scraping webdata from a website that loads data in a streaming fashion

I'm trying to scrape some data off of the FEC.gov website using python for a project of mine. Normally I use python

mechanize and beautifulsoup to do the scraping.

I've been able to figure out most of the issues but can't seem to get around a problem. It seems like the data is

streamed into the table and mechanize.Browser() just stops listening.

So here's the issue: If you visit http://query.nictusa.com/cgi-bin/can_ind/2011_P80003338/1/A ... you get the first 500

contributors whose last name starts with A and have given money to candidate P80003338 ... however, if you use

browser.open() at that url all you get is the first ~5 rows.

I'm guessing its because mechanize isn't letting the page fully load before the .read() is executed. I tried putting a

time.sleep(10) between the .open() and .read() but that didn't make much difference.

And I checked, there's no javascript or AJAX in the website (or at least none are visible when you use the 'view-

source'). SO I don't think its a javascript issue.

Any thoughts or suggestions? I could use selenium or something similar but that's something that I'm trying to avoid.

Why not use an html parser like lxml with xpath expressions.

Web data scraping (online news comments) with Scrapy (Python)


Since you seem like the try-first ask-question later type (that's a very good thing), I won't give you an answer, but a (very detailed) guide on how to find the answer.

The thing is, unless you are a yahoo developer, you probably don't have access to the source code you're trying to scrape. That is to say, you don't know exactly how the site is built and how your requests to it as a user are being processed on the server-side. You can, however, investigate the client-side and try to emulate it. I like using Chrome Developer Tools for this, but you can use others such as FF firebug.

So first off we need to figure out what's going on. So the way it works, is you click on the 'show comments' it loads the first ten, then you need to keep clicking for the next ten comments each time. Notice, however, that all this clicking isn't taking you to a different link, but lively fetches the comments, which is a very neat UI but for our case requires a bit more work. I can tell two things right away:

    They're using javascript to load the comments (because I'm staying on the same page).
    They load them dynamically with AJAX calls each time you click (meaning instead of loading the comments with the page and just showing them to you, with each click it does another request to the database).

Now let's right-click and inspect element on that button. It's actually just a simple span with text:

By looking at that we still don't know how that's generated or what it does when clicked. Fine. Now, keeping the devtools window open, let's click on it. This opened up the first ten. But in fact, a request was being made for us to fetch them. A request that chrome devtools recorded. We look in the network tab of the devtools and see a lot of confusing data. Wait, here's one that makes sense:

See? _xhr and then get_comments. That makes a lot of sense. Going to that link in the browser gave me a JSON object (looks like a python dictionary) containing all the ten comments which that request fetched. Now that's the request you need to emulate, because that's the one that gives you what you want. First let's translate this to some normal reqest that a human can read:

Now it's just a matter of trial-and-error. However, a few things to note here:

    Obviously the count is what decides how many comments you're getting. I tried changing it to 100 to see what happens and got a bad request. And it was nice enough to tell me why - "Offset should be multiple of total rows". So now we understand how to use offset

    The content_id is probably something that identifies the article you are reading. Meaning you need to fetch that from the original page somehow. Try digging around a little, you'll find it.

    Also, you obviously don't want to fetch 10 comments at a time, so it's probably a good idea to find a way to fetch the number of total comments somehow (either find out how the page gets it, or just fetch it from within the article itself)

    Using the devtools you have access to all client-side scripts. So by digging you can find that that link to /get_comments/ is kept within a javascript object named YUI. You can then try to understand how it is making the request, and try to emulate that (though you can probably figure it out yourself)

    You might need to overcome some security measures. For example, you might need a session-key from the original article before you can access the comments. This is used to prevent direct access to some parts of the sites. I won't trouble you with the details, because it doesn't seem like a problem in this case, but you do need to be aware of it in case it shows up.

    Finally, you'll have to parse the JSON object (python has excellent built-in tools for that) and then parse the html comments you are getting (for which you might want to check out BeautifulSoup).

As you can see, this will require some work, but despite all I've written, it's not an extremely complicated task either.

So don't panic.

It's just a matter of digging and digging until you find gold (also, having some basic WEB knowledge doesn't hurt). Then, if you face a roadblock and really can't go any further, come back here to SO, and ask again. Someone will help you.
